“480 Minutes” - Soft-Pedaling Danger

The mainstream media keeps falling short. Today I heard Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Eugene Robinson talking with (MSNBC’s insufferably smug) Ari Melber about the GOP. They appeared to agree that only a sliver of the party is down with the insurrection…completely ignoring the fact that most Republicans running for president in 2024 have pledged to PARDON those responsible for the attack on the Capitol. There’s a video below highlighting the truly terrifying level of cognitive dissonance required to still be a Trump supporter, but this conversation was an example of how the mainstream media falls victim to it, too.

It’s maddening & it’s destructive because this soft-pedaling emboldens the violent extremists & allows people who aren’t paying quite enough attention/don’t want to know to think things are bad but not dire. There is an anti-democratic behemoth that often sides with Vladimir Putin currently trying to teach our kids that systemic racism doesn’t exist, that LGBTQ+ Americans don’t (or shouldn’t be allowed to) exist, & that a book that mentions a teen boy noticing that a teen girl had developed breasts is somehow a moral hazard. Said behemoth has a powerful tool of a rogue & illegitimate Supreme Court super-majority that doesn’t even bother following it’s own precedents, much less presents established & respected for decades. Not calling this out for what it is — a fascist faux-theocratic attempt by a minority to crush representative democracy — only improves it’s likelihood for success.

Today’s live-hosted indie rock noise pop post-punk shoe gaze psych & garage rock show runs from 9am until 5pm Eastern U.S. Time & will feature new music by Talking To Shadows (Baltimore, MD, @TalkingToShadows). There were other submissions this week but some were 160kbps, a couple were 64kbps (!), others had missing or incorrect metadata, & truth be told most were simply not up to snuff.
