“480 Minutes” - Girl’s Rule!

Before I reached teen hood I realized that organized religion was more about control than about peace & love & ethics & certainly inclusion. It set up both an implicit & explicit us vs. them paradigm that I thought was beyond stupid, it was destructive & I wanted no part of it. Later I learned of the Voltaire line, “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities” which rang true to me, solidifying my atheism.

My post last week seemed to some to unfairly call out Catholicism over all other oraganized religions. That was not my intention but I totally get how it was taken that way. While the post did center on the Catholic Church & it’s systemic cover-up of & perpetuation of child sexual abuse, that was meant as the prime example of how destructive organized religion can be, not the only example. Just look at the Middle East today with myriad seemingly intractable, volatile, & homicidal conflicts between & even within religions, or Asia with the subjugation of Muslim Uyghurs & Tibetan Buddhists by the Chinese gov’t, & of course The Crusades (oops, that was the Catholic Church, too!). Speaking of which, those Church child sex scandals were known up the chain of command revealing that corruption ran (runs?) to the core of the massive organization. Until called out by brave victims, their families, & investigative journalism, the Church hierarchy utterly failed to protect kids from predatory clergy & to ensure the sex criminals were brought to justice.

There I go again, dunking on the Catholic Church! D’oh.

Meanwhile Apple & Google have caved to #SleepyDon’s absurdist nationalistic obsession & renamed the Gulf of Mexico & Lake Ontario on their maps. I am shocked. I guess if one tech behemoth complied the other felt it had to, but really…their headquarters are not that far apart. Couldn’t the higher-ups have met for a nice lunch at the Mac Cafe or Googleplex or an In-N-Out Burger & decided to stand firm together? What would have happened if they did? More toothless threats & bluster & foolishness while inflation runs amok, Hammered Hegseth can’t figure out how to get our troops out of Iran, & the U.S. military runs out of munitions & allies? Instead they surrendered to a lame duck bully who is leading his party to slaughter in the midterm elections (a boy can dream). Timothy Snyder advises in his excellent quick read, On Tyranny, “Do not obey in advance.” Doing so allows the fascists to get what they want w/o effort, risk, or culpability. Unnecessary compliance emboldens the jackbooted ICE thugs along with the rest of the cruel ghouls attempting to push marginalized groups into the shadows (or worse) & stamp out freedom for the many while protecting the 1% as they rob the 99% blind.

Of course to the rest of the world those names haven’t changed. I did appreciate one tongue-in-cheek Canadian proposal to rename Lake Ontario to Lake Obama, which would immensely annoy The Orange Vulgarian. Of course that would not make most Canadians happy, either - maybe they’d accept it to frustrate their tormentor as long as the change included the stipulation that the lake would return to its real name once the Dumb Bully leaves office.

This situation reminds me of a few years ago when the party of Lies Adultery & Pedophilia tried to ban as unsafe Mifepristone, an abortifacient that had been studied, found safe, & been in use w/o incident for 20+ years. They then hand-picked a true believer judge in Texas (who had zero business making a ruling on this) to make the drug illegal, or at least muddy the waters enough so that states & medical professionals & retailers didn’t know which way was up. A warning letter from Republican governors made the cowardly higher-ups at Walgreens wet themselves & as a result that giant drug store chain pre-emptively refused to dispense Mifepristone even in some states in which it would remain completely legal. Walgreens obeyed in advance. The partial success of this faux-religious attempt to make forced-birth the standard showed that Epstein’s best bud (who, like Jeff, “likes them on the younger side”) & the Religious Right that they could bully massive corporations with obvious bluster & some would crumble like feta.

Enough politics? OK. We will be discussing bagels shortly, but first it’s time for the sports report…
