“480 Minutes” - Memories of CMJ
From the “blast from the past” department: this week I received an e-mail from long-time listener Danielle in Florida who had been going through old papers & stumbled across this:
Funny story: I won the award but didn’t know until months later. CMJ (College Music Journal/music festival, RIP) never informed me. At some point BAGeL Radio received a poster tube in the mail. At that time (2005) we received TONS of physical promo materials most of which we had little interest in. Several months after it arrived I got around to opening the poster tube, inside of which was a cool hand-painted CMJ poster, one I liked enough to consider framing & hanging in the studio. It looked a lot like the one in the image w/ the bunnies above, only in color. I left it on a table under some heavy books to flatten it hoping to counteract the effects of being curled up in a tube for months. A few days later my then-girlfriend noticed it, moved the books to inspect, & asked me why I hadn’t told her I’d won a CMJ award. She showed me that it wasn’t just a cool poster, it was my award! The first CMJ award ever given to an internet radio station!
I framed the poster & proudly hung on the studio wall until we relocated to NYC where it got destroyed by a flood in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in 2021. Also destroyed at the time: dozens of Fillmore posters (many framed) collected during The S.F. Years, & art at photo prints that were important to me but that I didn’t have space to display after relocating. Alas…
Thanks, Danielle, for the fun trip down memory lane.

Check out bagelconcertfinder.com to conjure your very own BAGeL-curated list of artists performing near you. If you’ve never been into attending live music, give it another try. If you stopped or curtailed going to shows during lockdowns (as I did) start going to shows again. It’s good for the soul & you’ll realize that you’ve missed the experience of seeing humans perform sounds that make you feel something in the company of tens, hundreds, or even thousands of others also moved by those sounds.
Don’t forget your ear plugs!
BAGeL Radio is entirely listener-supported, so if the station adds to your life & you are in a position to help keep us on the air & commercial-free then please make a (U.S.) tax-deductible one-time or recurring donation. Thanks!
