“480 Minutes” - Soapbox
The weather turned nice again, then it rained enough to worry Noah, then it got too hot, then it was nice again. We’ve had a few weeks already this Spring during which daytime temperatures fluctuated from the 50s℉ (10s℃) to the 90s℉ (33℃) over the course of a few days. Bizarre.

In tragic news, yesterday a celebrated former National Hockey League star who won multiple Stanley Cups & scored more playoff goals than almost any other player in league history took his own life at age 60 just a few days after he was honored as the torch-bearer at the start of a playoff game feauring the Montreal Canadiens, one of the teams with which he won the Stanley Cup.
His suicide is a stark reminder that you really don’t know what’s going on with another person: three days after being cheered wildly & celebrated by more than 20,000 fans Claude Lemieux took his own life. It’s up to each of us to observe our friends & families & co-workers & everyone else in our circles of influence. If those observations reveal that something about them is a little bit off it’s up to us to gently ask them what’s up. Sometimes that simple feeling of being noticed can help by making the person who is struggling realize that they matter because you’ve shown them that someone cares enough to ask. Sometimes lending an ear & hearing them out is what’s needed. Sometimes more involved action like helping them seek professional help and/or alerting others that they trust of the situation might be appropriate. It all starts with caring enough to pay attention.
On the other side if you are the person who is not feeling like themselves, maybe feeling sad or antisocial or unable to wring joy from the things that usually bring joy, it’s up to you to talk with someone you love & trust. Don’t worry what they’ll think of you, or that you don’t want to add to their burdens, if they love you none of that will matter & just that simple act of reaching out can start you on the road back.
The U.S. national suicide helpline can be reached by dialing 988.
